Notes About The Poem

This poem is inspired by "When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras" a medical maxim coined by Dr. Theodore Woodward in the 1940s. My oldest stepdaughter lives in a delusion that she is being stalked. She believes that her "opposition" infiltrates not only her devices and car, but ours too. She checks the analytics and sees intrusions in the dense computer language and believes medical experimentation is being done on her by the "opposition" using satelites. It is heartbreaking, but recently I was able to get her to use one of my iPads to research. First time in years and she has begun to talk about her beliefs in a different way. I'm careful not to challenge her or agree, but to make her feel that I care how she feels.

HOOFBEATS

In the distance she hears the thundering sound of
	hoofbeats
coming nearer, nearer, so much nearer.

She strains her eyes peering into the misty
	darkness,
looking for the zebras she knows are out there.

The sound of the hoofbeats is getting
	louder—
she steps back hoping they won’t see her.

Moving forms burst from the darkness,
	horses
racing past her, quickly disappearing.

She turns and faces the darkness, listening for the
	hoofbeats
of the zebras. She waits, and waits, and waits…

This poem seems to capture well some anxiety disorder in your loved one. "Moving forms burst from the darkness" reminds me of the large floater that's constantly in my vision. It drives me nuts sometimes, especially when I'm driving the car and I think a bird just flew past my windshield. So, I have a degree of empathy for her. Moon Harp
