He didn't have a coat of many colors
he had many coats in different colors
each day he wore a different one
whatever struck his fancy, his mood
whatever made me feel suave, cool
whatever made him feel mannishly approved

He changed those colors
in kaleidoscope speed
so fast that it seemed
he had a coat of many colors
yet in the end
he wound up cold
none of the coats
could keep him warm
though each one had its charm
the constant changing caused alarm
No coat felt special, real
and by some magic mystery
when he reached in the closet
each one he pulled out
had turned to black
in coat rebellion attack
mutiny
Back to black
to match the color
of his monochrome heart

Ooooh I love this one... quite unique take on the "many-colored coat". I can sympathize with this man. I try my best to be the same, no matter who I am around, rather than wearing masks for the particular occasion. Others, you can tell, act completely different depending on who they are with! And it makes one wonder ... which one is the real you?

I have known people like this. It is so much easier just being yourself. Perhaps they don't feel they have permission to be who they are or maybe they are afraid people won't like the real them or maybe they haven't figured it out yet.

Eileen, this is SO COOL. Honestly, I think you are an amazing free verse poet. I'll take your kind of free verse any day over some of the weird ones I see that are like trying to read GREEK!!! Love this.

It is hard for a womanizer to find stability in life, especially where love is concerned. Like an addict, the need for change becomes a drug which he can't make do without. Matching this topic to a many coloured coat is very creative. Hugs // paul

This is an intriguing piece, people try to change the outside when it is the inside that is in need of colour.

Well penned. I don't know if you've seen the Australian TV series Rake but in one episode but in one of the episodes, Cleaver defends a man such as you describe. Cheers Dave

Black and white can be interesting as well as color. Some people can not see color so Black is the norm for them. Too much change can hurt as well so it comes down to what you want in life A whirl wind of color or the mundane ordinary. You will always have color in your life. Rejoice Blessings Edith
