-His Favourite Meal

She walked down to the supermarket
To buy the ingredients to make him a special meal
A lamb roast was his favourite
Followed by apple pie and custard to seal the deal

She cooked away happily
Looking forward to his arrival home
The table set perfectly with a vase of coloured flowers
From her garden she had grown

He must of been held up at work ,she thought
As hours rolled by …. late afternoon turning to night
She sat in complete darkness at the kitchen table
Tears rolling down her cheeks as realisation came to light

He was not coming home tonight or any night
For he had passed many years before
Her silent tears turned to gut wrenching sobs
As reality ripped out her heart and she fell to the floor

A very emotional poem, Deb. Our memories can be so cruel at times. They can seem so real that the sudden realization that we are not in reality can be crushing, physically and emotionally. Smiles ~ Blessings my friend, Bill

Yes, gut wrenching one, this one, Deb ! The twist in last verse is very powerful in conveying the intention of poem : life with loved ones is fleeting - all the more reason to live in the NOW, whatever effort is involved. I resonate with line : she sat in complete darkness in kitchen - a straightforward commentary on life. Blessings to you.

Oh, my gosh, I thought he was out cheating and would have preferred it to the pain induced delusion of the poem's character. Great poetic job of setting the reader up to crush under the weight of her realization. Oh, my. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Sounds like she'll be gone soon too -- via dementia. Life is just too cruel. ~ Gershon

You appeal to our emotions with this poem that probably many others can relate to, and end up with misty eyes as well, Deb. Sometimes it is so hard to accept changes in life, and we can easily end up in denial. ~ Regards // paul

Deb,,my friend! Sometimes we lose people and forget they are gone! I will start talking about a friend of mine and my daughter has to remind me “you’re talking about a dead friend..I know that sounds crazy, but it happens off and on.. especially someone I was really close to. And by the way, what’s more important is your poem!nI think it was written extremely well and touched my heart.. FOF and love, “Pangie’
