Hill Rats

Wild children of the Hill,
Grandpa coined us with a laugh....
a tribe of cousins,
of Polish descent.
We ruled that terrain,
basking in the sublime east coast greenery we ran wild as young Indians, billowing up on everlasting summer breezes as we formed our pact:
the girls were angels,
the boys were devils.
The decree was cement, behind boulders we hid from each other,
our club exclusive.
An audience of teenage neighbors cheered us on,
until our eight year old minds
felt the mean kids mumble "hill rats."
