Highs and Lows

Last week was filled with extreme highs and lows
Having a loved one with mental illness and substance abuse
Can be like that, with threats of suicide one day
And the decision to finally go to rehab the next
My own emotions swing with the circumstances
But a lot of times I feel numb, yet try to stay positive
With a smile on my face and in my mind,
I continually count my my blessings
Grateful that I still have my son with me,
Because we have come very close to losing him before
The swings are much better than a gut wrenching loss
Yet, the journey is still a tough road to travel

What a great poem about the emotional turmoil and resilience of a caregiver dealing with a loved one’s mental illness and substance abuse.
