Heroes
At some point in time,
But I don't know when;
Nor do I know why, but
I well remember who.
I gazed back over my life
And was pleased for doing so.
I mused on the theme of heroes
And formed a short list of my own.
Not everyone has or needs heroes,
But surely everyone needs someone.
I don't suppose that the choice of a hero
Should ever be one to be taken lightly.
The number of heroes on my list was five,
But the list has now been reduced to only one.
One by one they finished their earthly course
And joined hand in hand with the heavenly realm.
Except for one, they were very up close and personal.
Although I saw him in person, I never met one of them
Who was also a hero to the world. I greatly admired
Him from a distance, and was very influenced by him.
The youngest of them all, and the only one younger
Than me, still remains. I am very proud of and greatly
Inspired by him. He astonishes and occasionally amazes me.
Beyond those five, I don't know if there will ever be another.
