Her

Her voyage began a few decades ago
Day for day life took her slowly down the rabbit hole of despair
Hitting most rocky edges on her way down
How far she'd go was unclear, because it took many moons to finally realise that she was falling

She took every sharp pain, every failure, every heartbreak in her stride
She continued life's dark journey by herself
Strong enough through continuous turmoil
Until one day she didnt see it as failures anymore, but as challenges

Love lost, she took as a guide how to not have her heart broken
Every person trusted as a lesson not to trust so easily
Every failed opportunity as a mission to never repeat
Every bruise life handed out as what to avoid in future

She appeared weightless
Always smiling, her head held high
Building and supporting others
Only those that dared to look into her eyes, knew of the heavy burden she was carrying

Her stride never slowed
Her smile never faded
Her spirit always rose above her circumstances
Slowly she was crawling up the rabbit hole

Unbeknownst to anyone, she continuously strived upwards
Slowly she progressed without a helping hand, as no one noticed her despair
A festering wound forcing her to seek escape
Her strong will her driving force to overcome all obsticles

Until she finally reached and embraced freedom
Rays of sunlight dancing in her hair
Her head turned towards the heat of the sun
Her eyes closed, while tears streamed down her cheeks and her lips forming a smile

She passed her own personal challenge
All weight disappeared from her shoulders, as she laid it down in the past
Her hands lifted in praise as she was finally free
She could never be the same ever again, she wasn't her anymore

Thanks for sharing this... exposing your thoughts through your unique poetic style. Meanwhile, I greet you with the love of the Lord, expressed by John 3:16 of the Bible, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Have a blessed day.

Hi Yolanda, I observed that your path and mine have a distinct similarity: we both posted poems here in 2016 and took 3 years off before returning. I mention that only because your poem reflects my journey over those 3 years. Your metaphor of climbing up the rabbit hole provides hope for those who have lost hope or can't envision life ever turning around for the better. I liked how she learned valuable life lessons from all the heartbreaks and disappointments. Hope you keep writing! ~ John

Hi John. Quite a coincidence. I indeed took a break from posting. I did write still, but often in my home language, Afrikaans. I must write to be able to make sense of this life! Will read your poems. All the best.
