Hell Translation Canto Xxxi Part 2
(continue from previous)
We walked then a farther site to reach,
Turning to left; and at leaf spring far throw,
We found other larger, fiercer to breach.
In binding him, whoever did it though
I cannot tell, but he just had quite close
In front the other, back the right arm stow
With a chain strictly bonding him at those
From the neck down, so that on naked part
It was enfolding around five turns rows.
“This uppish wanted to exert his art
Of power at Jupiter highest sir”,
Told my duke, “This is why makes his state tart.
His name is Ephialtes, whose great acts were
At times when the giants produced to gods scare;
The arms he used to fight, can never stir”.
And I to him: “If can be, I would share
With the Briareus enormous giant just
Experience for my eyes, I then dare”.
Thus he responded: “Antaeus see must
Here nearby who is talking and is free,
Who will give deep news about any bust.
Is far away the one you want to see,
And also he is bonded like this one,
Except that looked much fiercer face to me”.
Never an earthquake was as strong to run,
Which stirred a tower in such hard way,
As Ephialtes did when fast moved and stun.
I feared to die at that point was such weigh,
And there was any escape than the scare,
If I had not seen on him the chains sway.
We then went forward to proceed and fare
And then we reached Antaeus, who just tall,
Outside cavern was emerging quite bare.
“You who in the lucky valley , recall,
Which made Scipio of long glory heir,
When Hannibal’s army suffered the fall,
Brought yet thousand lions as prey to take care,
And who, if had been at the other war
Of your brothers, still it looks be aware
That would have won the sons of the ground shore:
Put us then down, and disgusted don’t be,
Where Cocytus keeps all at frost to store.
Tityus or Typhoeus avoid we see:
This one can give which here is aimed for;
So bend your back then and don’t refuse thee.
He can in world bring fame to you still more,
Since is living, and yet long life can wait
If divine grace does not call him before”.
So master told; and he at hurry rate
His hands extended, and then my duke kept,
A grip yet Hercules could feel whose weight.
Virgil, when he felt to be kept and trapped,
Told me: “Come here, so that now I grab you”;
And then made us a single bundle wrapped.
As it looks like at Garisenda view
Below the valley, when a cloud can go
Above it so, that it hangs over through:
Same it appeared Antaeus to me though
I was looking while was bending at him
And I would have wanted elsewhere me throw.
But gently to the bottom of the rim
With Lucifer and Judah, put then us;
Neither, so bent, he then remained on brim,
And as the mast of ship he heaved now thus.
