He Seems To Be a Winner

The 38th Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro,
known for his far-right political view,
some brand him as a right-wing demagogue,
and a radical religious nationalist.

A vocal opponent of same-sex marriage,
abortion, drug liberalization and secularism,
the Supreme Court opened criminal action against him
for insulting women with sexually offensive comments.

He spent his childhood in the Amazon valley,
its rainforest his regime was accused of destroying
in the name of industrial development and progress.
This he rejected as being a false propaganda.

His casual response to COVID was criticized
across the political spectrum, for he downplayed
the seriousness of the pandemic and its effects,
opposed the safety protocol even the death toll rose.

During the last presidential election campaign,
he was stabbed by a man on “a mission of God”.
This made him a hero, but he lost to Lula,
his supporters stormed high institutions and congress.

He denied the responsibility of civil disobedience,
rejected the election as being rigged and illegitimate,
went away to Florida as the Brazilian President
to avoid taking part in Lula’s swearing-in ceremony.

He eventually returned home to be with countrymen,
and to face the charges of corruption and misconduct.
His motto “the truth will set you free” (John 8.32)
seems to make him a winner.
