Haven

How do I articulate that I am human–
that I, too, have urges?

I want you to hold me,
to keep me as though I were yours,
and, at times, to let me go.

I long for an embrace that lingers,
yet leaves enough room
for all my chaos
to fit between your arms.

You would love me for all that I am,
after all.

I want the freedom
to break loose when I need to,
for I can promise you this:
I will always choose my way back to you.

Pardon me,
for I do not wish to play with your heart-
to treat you as a home when I am needy,
and a stranger when I am whole.

My leaving is only a reminder
to the demons in my mind
that I am capable of flight,
that I do not live
hidden beneath your shadow.

No matter how long the journey,
or how far I may wander,
you shall remain my haven.
