Notes About The Poem

THE TITLE OF THE POEM IS TAKEN FROM A BEAUTIFULSONG BY ROD STEWART

Have I Told You Lately That I Love You

Recent events in my life have made me think about love
and saying the words ‘I love you.’
My father was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer
Every time I see him and mum I say how much I love them both
  - one day soon I will never be able to say those words to them again.

The words ‘I love you.’ We use them with our partners in a romantic way,
maybe we don’t say it often enough and just take it for granted that they
know we love them.
I say ‘I love you’ to my son – maternal love – to me it is simply the best feeling
in the world
Close family – we love them but in a different way to that of our partners
and children.

Darren Watson’s unexpected recent illness has made me appreciate how
lucky I am to have wonderful friends and I just want to let people know
how very special they are to me.

You may have noticed that I always sign off my comments
with ‘Hugs Jan xx’ – two expressions of love
and we all need a hug and a kiss from time to time.

hi my friend. it is the greatest gift we have, the ability to love; it is the essence of the soul. whether it be god given or just evolutionary chance it is what defines our lives and makes us unique in the world. Like you my parents do not say "i love you" often but that does not change the fact that i know they do and never doubt it for a moment. Somtimes a touch or even just to be there speaks louder than a thousand protestations of love. remember that love given always finds love in return

I used to be bitter about love, my dad never said I love you. But now I do realize how short life is, and there is no harm in saying it, only healing. this world needs love, and I love love! love u jan you are terrific :)

You have expressed the feelings that most people have that they are afraid will make them vulnerable. I love you!! How simple and how meaningful and how much we miss having said them to ones we have lost. Well done my dear Hugs and more hugs Edith mamabear

Thank you so much mama bear.(I know you are mama to the lovely Richard:-) This write has been brought about by the fact my father has terminal cancer and my writing partner Darren hasn't been in contact and I have recently discovered hes been quite ill - I guess saying we love someone or telling them how special and important they are to us doesn't always come easily and unfortunately in some cases it it just too late. Big hugs to you, dear. Your observation of the need to express our love brought tears to my eyes. Only recently have my sister and I been saying that to each other before we end each phone call. Mom and Dad always expressed their love, but with them gone, my sister's expressions mean even more to me. You touched my heart deeply. A fave, of course. Love, Carolyn

Thank you so much Carolyn I guess it is something we should say more regularly not just to our partners but to people who touch our lives - even if we just tell them home much they mean to us rather than say we 'love them' it is too late when someone is gone they need to know it now:-) Hugs Jan xx

Thanks Tim - some people find it so hard to say those three little words and live to regret it as the other person doesn't feel appreciated and cherished , others may use it all the time and the true meaning is lost. Love you too my friend:-) Hugs as ever Jan xx

Oh Jan....I'm SO upset...the ads on the right hand side are cutting off your lines and they are SO important. :( Oh! So true...Beautiful in every way. We can never say it enough. I'm touched by this. So sorry I can't read those important words at the end of the lines.
