- Haunted Beauty -

The family had just moved into an old castle in Scotland;
mother, father and their only daughter, Emmie, that they loved so deeply.
Emmie was only 12 years old, and so innocent and beautiful.
One night, she was woken up by a dripping sound;
an echoing sound of water drops in a sink;
rhythmic and terrifying.
She sat on her bed, and suddenly appeared a free floating arc of strange light.
It's that time of year again: Halloween night.
Doors flew open and shut; strange voices and footsteps started.
She was so frightened, that she almost threw up.
Emmie made the sign of the cross, and plunged into a thicket of thorny wild roses.
Terrified, excited and ready to run out of the house in 20 seconds,
she overheard whispering words: "All beauty must die."
The voice was so deathly, that it sent chills through her spine.
It did not make it any better that it sounded too close to her ears.
Her nightdress being torn by rose thorns like papers in a paper shredder,
she ran as fast as she could; not back to the old castle,
but away from the creepy voice, and strange events
in the old castle.
Exhausted, she searched for a place she could find rest
"All beauty must die" the voice visited
her unceremoniously once more. "What do you want from me?
Is it wrong to be born beautiful? "
she asked, wondering where she got her courage from.
The energy to scream or run departed her,
the moment she saw a woman dressed in white,
levitating in the air, and moving towards her;
a horrid face that carried the night's darkness,
looked decayed, with worms crawling out from it.
Remember this is a true story about Emmie;
she gets chills just remembering the events of that night……

Now this is entirely different altogether. A different flavor to the other collaborations. Worth a read.

narration brings on me a very eerie feeling. A dollop of repugnant images "...with worms crawling out from it." added to intensify the creepiness of the poems. This poem is very well-crafted. Truly, Anne-Lise, your skill, in this poem, befits a master. Bless. ----RAJAT

Anne-Lise . . . A really great job here with this free verse write!! I think that you and Teddy have a scary one here. I like this write and gave you and Teddy a "7" here. Liam and I just happen to have a Halloween Co-Write in with Diane too. Our poem has some humor in it to a slight degree, which is a departure for me, since I usually have written some very dark heavy pieces in the past. It's all fun in the end anyway. Best of Luck in the contest!! Cheers and Spill Ink!! Gary

... all beauty must die... yikes! That's definitely a creepy catch phrase. I wonder where this Lady in White came from... perhaps jealous of everyone else's beauty? Good Halloween narrative!

Well done to both of you, Anne Lise & Teddy. You managed to create the right atmosphere for a scary tale; I would not want to fall into thorny wild roses! Beauty should be preserved and not eliminated. gl in the contest. /x/ paul

Dear Anne-Lise and Teddy, you wove this tale wonderfully and the image of the ghostly woman pursuing Emmie is surely haunting. I did see a ghost once, but others in college saw the same one and it was not menacing. I'm a believer in spirits, so I hope Emmie breaks free of these terrifying visions. Surely a winner in Diane's contest. (She said she had a treat for the winners.) Wishing both of you success always! Love, Carolyn
