Notes About The Poem

Author's Notes:   This is a "Tanka" or a Japanese verse form write on the subject of "Hate." For this write, I've looked at "Hate" from the perspective of it being a most negative force and that intangible curse and cancer that can wound our souls very deeply and literally destroy the goodness in us as human beings.  Just like with "Love," "Hate" can be both a rational and an irrational force which can have deleterious consequences both individually and certainly in relationships.  This negative emotion in contradistinction to "Love," can destroy the very fabric and goodness of a relationship between two people, and where Love can help shape the destiny of a couple, "Hate" can ruin it -- perhaps forever.  The syllable count for this Tanka is:  5-7-5-7-7 (for a total of 31 syllables).  Gary Bateman - November 19, 2014) (Tanka poetic format)

Hate

Hate's human folly—
A most tragic emotion,
A sign of despair . . .
       It splits people asunder . . .
Brings sadness and wounds the soul!

Hi Gary! Yes, my dear friend, hatred is a very powerful emotion and compare it (but true love is even more powerful than any hate to me ) to a very cancererous eating disease that far to many people carry in their hearts to the point of destruction for others and sometimes even themselves. All we do is pray for those consumed and driven by it. I feel sorry for them. I don't want any part of it in my life.;) I love your tanka about this very important topic. a 7 for me! :) Love and hugs! xxxx D.

Hello D -- Yes, I feel the same way here. Since I wrote about "Love" first, then I decided to explore its inverse: "Hate." Where I'm at now in my life, I try to steer clear of negativity in all forms. My former military career gave me an object lesson in life about aspects of good and bad in people. Goodness is always best!! Cheers and XOXO, Gary

Andrea, You're certainly right about that!! I find that when I write a Tanka on a given topic (like "Love"), when finished, I then do one on that topic's inverse (like this one on "Hate'). This gives me a way of looking at both sides of a poetic notion: positive/negative, good/bad, etc. All the Best!! Gary

Liam . . . Yes indeed My Mate, hate is such a horrible face -- a more negative and virulent force used to hurt others. It's always best to stay away from it at all costs!! Best Always Mate, Gary

Yes, Gary, hate is a poison, literally. When we hate someone our body undergoes a chemical change. BP/BS rises. I have tested it. So it is against God's wish. Then why do we hate? It's tragic indeed. Well done Gary. Added to my fav list.Love to you and your family. Keep in good health and laugh always. God bless. XXX RAJAT

Rajat, You are absolutely right on this my friend. I may explore topics like this as a writer, but I do my best not to get trapped by these kinds of emotions for the reasons you listed below. You're right . . . "It's tragic indeed." Best to smile when possible and keep laughing!! Fun is important!! Best Wishes to you and your family. Love and Peace Always, Gary

Charma, Thanks for your comments here!! I posted one earlier on Love, but I could hardly just write about it without touching on its polar opposite. Best Always, Gary
