Happiness By my own Measure
Walking in this fallow field
All on the sudden and so real
A happy and blissful me was revealed
Surely, such Joy I have no right to feel
My days are labor, my nights solemn
I grope for meaning, but ere thee well
I clamber my self up from the bottom
With noises of laughter that ever swell
For where is the sadness I should bare-
My life is full and seemingly spared
From others griefs and worn despair
I think I’m happy with what life’s shared
I have a home to call my own
My cupboards are full-
From fields bountiful
But ere my fellows bellow and moan
How the life is awful
And misfortune artful
How they work for so little return
A pittance for every hour of toil
They look on life as something earned
And honest labors a constant foil
They laugh on me and my naive life
Living so bold and unafraid
They e’en curse me and await a flood of strife
While I bask in the sunshine
In the blossoming bosom of the glade
Wrong to love this life that’s mine?
I wonder what they see when thy look on me
Would they compare darkness with light
For each has its purpose, if we but see
And not seek out false enmity to fight
The sun is shining, the brook agleam with light
The birds are singing their praises upon the day
The moon will shine upon the stars, it’s silvery light
It is within these hours, my heart is at play
In the dawning light, I’ll till the field
In the fiery dusk, I’ll watch the sun slip away
Into the folds of the starry heather and weald
Where before thy vastness, I might pray
That peace find my fellows; remove the shroud
That hides the beauty and colours of the world
And give them chance for happy circumstance
And reveal, as was to me, a happiness unfurled
In the glooming shade, a promise made
In memory of thee where before me lay
Thy shadow that stretches from the home we made
That together in the light we find our way
There’s history here, our roots run deep
My fellows fear to look on your grave
But all things pass, like the winds upon the grass
An autumn brings its gold and harvest to hold
And see us through the winter's bearded dews
And cast away the past that should not last
And linger in thought; pain need forgot
So that we might move on to springs verdant lawn
And till with joy with the beams of the boy
That grew up here all these many years
And realized a happiness was hidden away
And realized he had thanks to pray
And the mere joy of life
In each passing day
