Happily Insane
Had I, O Lord, been born a simpleton
I would be unmindful of the worldly woes.
Let the apocalyptic disaster then come
and set the world on fire
I would just sit aside unconcerned
had I been born an ignorant bum.
Keeping my wits about me
is driving me down
a forbidding path to insanity.
All that I have heard in life,
whatever I have yet seen
had stayed within me like
a festering sore on my soul.
Lord, had I been born a fool,
ignorant of twisted hearts
and shallow minds,
wouldn't I live a happier life?
(“Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination”–Mark Twain)
