Hammock Days
Hammock Days
By Elton Camp
I don’t much like people for the old times pining
“It was so much better back then,” they’re whining
I’ll take air conditioning, electronics & medical care
Such things that were rarely seen way back there
Having to walk in the rain to school holds no delight
And the unreliable old cars of the fifties were a fright
The Cold War made us fearful that bombs would drop
Perhaps that life on our planet would come to a stop
But there is one pleasure that, with nostalgia, I recall
And that is having a hammock in which to sprawl
Ours was between two trees in the edge of the wood
And I slipped off down there anytime that I could
Inside the house was often very stuffy and quite hot
Lying out in the shade really helped me a whole lot
The sky so blue seen through the pattern of the leaves
Helped put away anxiety & annoyance of petty grieves
The gentle sound of the breeze through the trees blowing
The world held much good it left me confidently knowing
That I don’t lie in a hammock still, there’s only me to blame
I could put one up, but realize that it never could be the same
So what I recall about lying in hammocks back in that day
In memory, it is best left where it’s safely tucked away
