Halloween Poem # 1...Sad Little Clown

My doorbell rings and what do I see?
Ghosts and witches grinning at me
Kids of every shape and size
With painted faces and sparkling eyes

There in the glow of a pale street light
Ghouls and goblins are owning the night
But then I notice way off to the side
A lonely clown as he tries to hide

From the other kids in the neighbor's yard
I don't mean to stare but it's very hard
This little guy looks so lost and alone
Like a night of fun he's never been shown

I call to him,he comes to my side
I say "little one there's no need to hide
You look so sweet in your clown costume
Mommy dressed you up I assume?"

He started to cry and said to me
"My mom has gone to heaven you see
Daddy dressed me the best he knew how
Then dropped me off-that's why I'm here now"

So I said "Well you're the best ever clown"
With that he started to lose his frown
I filled his bag with treats and candy
Threw in some pennies that I had handy

He grinned and left to meet his dad
I thought of how he'd been so sad
Hoping I had brightened his night
I closed the door and shut off the light
