Cicadas are a kigo for late summer (July- known for their cries)
used in Japanese poetry.
Cicadas have an exceptionally loud song, produced by vibrating
drum-like tymbals rapidly.
Periodic cicadas live as underground nymphs, emerging only after
13 or 17 years and provide food for many predators.
