Peter Paul Rubens "Old Woman and Boy with Candles"  c.1616-1617

An old woman gazes ahead, shielding her eyes from the candlelight, while the boy behind her holds his candle, ready to be lit. The panel is painted in the style of Caravaggio, whose work Rubens had seen in Italy. This style is characterised by its exciting effects of light and unpolished naturalism.

Rubens did not make this painting to be sold; instead he retained possession of it. He probably used it as study material for the pupils in his studio.

Grandmother Always Encouraged As I stood in front of the baroque painting "Old Woman and a Boy with Candles", by Sir Peter Paul Rubens instantly trigger a warped déjà vu. An ebullient cacophony of absent voices I used to have with my grandmother. She would give me carte blanche around her home. It was an embarrassing anomaly I couldn't explain to my aunts. By their standards I was a bona fide dilettante and ennui . Grandmother always encouraged me in the creative avant-garde of arts by using my imagination and a strong sense of élan fantasy throughout my muse that I love. 1/18/2018

I can see where your talent with the brush gained inspiration, Eve. A lovely write. And talking of write, your subject matter reminds me of our very own Joseph Wright of Derby, a master at painting light, give him a google sometime. Congrats! Viv x

Hello, Arturo, she was a perfect grandmother, but my aunts hated me because she spoiled me. She would buy me art supplies and tell me don't tell ??? .. they'll be upset.. so funny ....
