Goodnight Mummy

What do children dream of when they go to sleep at night
and do their hearts beat faster when the world is out of sight
do they dream of Christmas or a birthday yet to come
of happy days or holidays - and playing in the sun

A place where wishes grow on trees and hide among the flowers
where eating sweets makes teeth grow strong and gives you super-powers
a timeless world, where yellow suns beam down from big blue skies
where bedtime never comes around - and no-one ever cries

Or is their sleep a refuge from the terrors of the day
a chilling world where secret fears bring panic and dismay
a twilight world where darkness clings like giant spider-threads
a shadowland where bogeymen hide underneath their beds

As parents we all have a say in where they travel to
when first they close their weary eyes and shut the world from view
don't be afraid to say you love them with all of your might
then you'll know what children dream of when they go to sleep at night
