Girls From Mclean
there is a town on the high plains
on the way to nothing
in the way of nothing
and in no particular order
are a few too many trailer homes
nestling, vying, clinging closely
to their mother superior,
Dairy Queen
the presumption that none
would venture this place on purpose
is falsified by some younger men
hailing from civilized parts
to soar down the old dirt roads
a nose ahead of sunset
why ever would they go
for only they must know
girls from McLean will do anything
free of charge and free of risk
to important reputations
it might be said that the daughters
of this panhandle hamlet
learned to speak, to cheat, to drink
from their occasional fathers
and the other life essentials
courtesy of Cosmo
thus they wait to accommodate
boys from towns on the highway
who will someday find a school
and a job and a wife, denying
they used to drive out to McLean
