Notes About The Poem

Gift of Recovery

Here, within my dark abyss of stark silence,
I hear the jangling tunes of rusted chains
   echo futile summer dreams
like wildflower chimes in the wind,
comforting my inner moon~
still bleeding self-inflicted sorrow,
in need of a balmy muse
as my heart painfully exhales poetry,
breathing in the peace of petrichor,
grieving through my pen on paper
amidst procrastinated punctuations,
   confusing the columns of calm
between the quiet quotations of healing.

But somewhere between the
   unpredictable lines of emotional storms,
      you’ll find our forgotten feelings,
  sedated by fireflies fluttering
through the musical mists of sleepless nights,
quenched like once upon a sacred quill,
    floating amongst salt and light,
like a crescent’s rose blooming into the blues,
learning to erase the unspoken shadows
lining the boulevard of my weathered soul,
for this is the song of the pearl
  resting in a sand-soaked bed
          of broken shells,
turning oceanic pages
with metaphors that ebb and flow,
like a collage of dancing diamonds,
   cleansed with colors of sunsets
softer than the chorus of h o p e
wrapped like souvenirs
           laced in saffron and sage.

IE, it seems to me you will always be a pearl whether resting on what could be perfection or a bed of broken shells. We can only control ourselves and where we are. Others around us will hopefully behave well and civilly. As you note, the remnants of what we go through are there for us to think about and provide memories we can develop a peaceful relationship to.

Nice imagery Ink. Your poems are so visual it makes me wonder what they would look like as paintings or animation.

A lot of pain running through this classic. Always wonder as humans if we need to hit rock bottom before we can rise up stronger. Good luck in the contest.

Like the Phoenix arising from the ashes, your engaging words speak to the adage that hope shines eternal within the human breast. Your eloquent depictions of life's challenges that we all must endure comes with a redeeming, glistening silver lining. With a nod to John Lennon--We all shine on. My best, Robert

You know I felt every word so strongly and deeply here... sigh! When life sends our souls in exile, we struggle and tend to find solace within fragmented alphabets that slip from the cracks of our heart. Poetry is truly therapeutic and the reason we are actually able to breathe, hah! I love your descriptions throughout, although aching, but they hit like home to me! "this is the song of the pearl resting in a sand-soaked bed of broken shells, turning oceanic pages with metaphors that ebb and flow" So gorgeous! The poetry related vocab you've used is absolutely genuine, whilst delicately combining with alliteration too! Your metaphors and imagery always give me peace, dear fairy goddess... "sedated by fireflies fluttering through the musical mists of sleepless nights" Ethereally inked!

From the dark abyss, we emerge "like a crescent’s rose blooming into the blues, learning to erase the unspoken shadows lining the boulevard of weathered soul, breathing in the peace of petrichor." This is exactly what we feel with the Gift of Recovery. Each one achieves it in varied ways. You derive it through your poetry "with metaphors that ebb and flow, like a collage of dancing diamonds" ! May I repeat- Your poems are indeed a collage of dancing diamonds. All the Best dear Empress.

I did not have a clue how to do this one, but you clearly set it up, the sorrow introduced in first verse and the hope of recovery described so well in verse 2: a fave, Inky
