Notes About The Poem

Gender Bender

Just deny that you once had a member You’re not gay and you are not transgender Cos it comes from the top that you’re in for the chop… but you voted him in, do remember! Inspired by the current news in the US today. The title is a play on words as I have read that at one time he was an ally of the gay and transgender community 27-07-17

I am openly gay and have been for all my life. I do not live in the USA but have always loved the country. I ever stand down for people who make fun or attack people of other race, colour and gender. I think Mr Trump is a vicious bully and will cause the mighty USA more harm than a transgender person wanting to serve their country, and serve it well they will. He clearly is not! I enjoyed your poem. Because I did not find it malicious or a mockery of the transgender community. Well done Jan.

Thanks Klio! I have some wonderful gay friends and last week I purchased my first ever 'civil partnership' card as they are having a ceremony in November. It's such a shame in this day and age that people cannot live and let live - on my little Island homosexuality was illegal and finally decriminalised in 1992! Now we have same sex marriages on the Island - hooray!!!:-) hugs jan xx

You're so right Jan when you say there are other more important issues in this world. Feed the hungry house the homeless cloth the naked. But to those who are transgender Here in America it is a most important one. I just wish people could leave the prejudices of the past in the past.

Hello Jan, I enjoyed your limerick as I enjoy all of your poetry. But in keeping with the spirit of the comments let me say this; although I am a Trump supporter I also Believe deep within my heart that if you truly wish to serve your country you should not be prohibited from doing so. I am also a former soldier, and I say let them serve!!!!

Glad you posted this Jan, it's all very painful. I am gay, and the atmosphere is getting grimmer by the day there. My transgender friends hurt and are afraid. And I feel helpless, all the way from Europe.

You are very open about your sexuality and I applaud you for writing poems on the subject - what is happening in the US is appalling - Trump is showing his true colours and they are not rainbow ones:-( hugs jan xx

Great limerick. And really, humor is the only avenue left if one does not want to sink into bleak despair.

I was in two minds whether to post it as its not a subject that some would find suitable for a poem, but I got the opinion of a friend in the US who said go ahead and post it - so i did:-) I try and use humour to deal with many difficult situations Agnes, sometimes the only thing is to just sit and grit your teeth and smile:-( hugs jan xx

Jan, this is clever and you are right. I'm not sure that transgender means the same thing as trans-sexual; in other words transgenders still have the body parts they were born with, but choose to live as the opposite one. Anyway our president and the right wing are a mess.

You are ALMOST correct Dale :) Transgender is a word that leaves it in the middle, you can either choose to do the transition, or you choose not to.
Allison Avatar
July 28, 2017 at 2:50 AM
The news headlines referred to them as transgender and that was ideal for my rhyme. I worry for the world with him in charge of the US I am sure there are many more pressing matters that need attention - this is probably just a smoke screen and something else is being covered up or am i just a cynic :-( hugs jan xx

I imagine some people would find the subject offensive but having worked with students who are undergoing gender re assignment I KNOW what a difference it has made to their lives and they are no longer trapped inside the wrong body. I am sure the debate over them not being allowed in the forces will rumble on:-) hugs Jan xx
