Further Along

Further Along Further along you might know some of the answers, further along perhaps you will understand the why. We met on a corner of an afternoon where the sun had stopped to shine; you smiled a well-practiced smile and I warmed myself slowly on you. We spoke about this and that, and that and this, and that was that. But It was always about you, my feelings needed learning, they were new. I was young, I was fresh to life, unsure of what to say, but just had to stay. And you were older in years, and of life, but I knew one day you would pull away. And so we danced and so we whirled through days and nights that sparked with joy. We walked, we talked, we flew! You, a beautiful bird without a cage, me, with wings not quite strong enough. For you liked other dances with other boys... who became men. Soon I had no answers, just questions that trickled away as you flapped those carefree wings I knew that you couldn’t stay! But it’s further along now and I too have danced again, I too have written a few love songs and shared the warmth of others. Yes further along you might know more of the answers, even further along perhaps you will understand the why! As I do now, about you and what is true! But still you tease me with you laughter, please me with your silhouetted dances that filter through certain thoughts and sparkle in distant places of my mind. So here I now calmly sit much further along in life, where memories dominate more than actions as I consider how much further there is to go. And I wonder how far in life you have flown how much as a person you would have grown. Then I smile at the fact you are still in control always near me, always stitched to my soul. Ian Souter
