From Your Fiancé
I found your letters yesterday—
Eighteen years ago.
You wisely wrote from Paris in francais
Without the pride, without the show.
I’m glad to note, I feel no more,
Reading you anew
Except to marvel how your closing door
Was shut so softly. Subtle you.
The tactfulness in every line
Missed me way back then.
Your dignity indelibly divine…
Thanks come slow from certain men.
