From the Tabloids

Tabloids of noon and night,
Tickling such tiding’s fancy
Specious and special, its forebodings.
Cusps wilted by rummage-reading and glancing.
It was nighttime and dead dark.
The hurricane lamp chose to be quixotic, and
We read on and on, each time bending the lamp and
Raising high its nictating lone eye shadowed
By smoothed, thin-lined soot.
Its oil was losing patience.
Letters and colourful missives and tales drain us.
City gossip frightens us delightedly.
Pages are so ecstatic, so heart-throbbing.
We hankered after the whetted appetites of
Zeal and zest, each page flicked fast and
With the curiosity that kills the romping cat.
Moments of basking in pool-water knowledge
Of wing-flapping gestures besiege our eyes.
Unearthed are tales, furtive, until bathed out
By the tongue-light, which, despite wasting its
Oil, maintained its charitable effulgence.
One fat globe well creamed with the lustre of arriving
Haloes.
Leaves lived and died, and the hidden things of
Life crept to the platform of Edutainment.
The voyeur’s story; the story of the connoisseur
Of oases wines, distilled by delicate hands of
Travelling strangers; the nit-witted shooter of
Plastic arrows against hardened flesh; the coming
To town of yokels from distant clans; the brio of
A dispersing pop music group; the rumbling sounds of
Danes in hamlets’ din;
The Beatles about to carry that weight of a reform
And to come together right now . . .
Thus the leaf-after-leaf rummaging thrived on.
Dimmed lights and silhouettes of agnostics praying
With their mouths gagged.
The tabloids lay fatigued and sighed like
Exhausted soils, preparing lines of lament
And tongue-clicking canticles close to Christmastime.
I call it a night of vigil that held out loose-ends of
Well-distributed CITY HEADLINES.
Believe it or not, that’s the essence.
Crimes and Crime Busters . . .
Allegories and scientific details.
Jack and Jill, Romeo & Juliet . . .
The CENTRAL MESSAGE smelled like
A forested scent.
Full of powdered glint, it was about
Obeisance to a
Master by the inheritor of a large estate,
Who wore his coat, a battered family heirloom,
Inside-out.
This particular page, larger than all
Others, had an unbending cusp, and
Bore the grievances of an invaded secret.
Spurious and sadistic it looked, for closing it
Remains a reminder of the final closing
Ceremony of that whose leaf of life flutters
With utter caution.
