From One Genxer To the Next Genxer

**Disclaimer! If RANT was a category for poems, I would list this as a rant. However, that is not an option, so I think this is best a free verse poem. However, it is a rant and it's a raw opinion of how I feel.

Sorry to break it to you
a message you don't want to hear,
but my Gen Xer friends
we all suck.

Okay if you want proof
just look at our children.
Are they entitled kids?
We taught them that.

Are they about looking after number one?
We taught them that.

Are they disrespectful?
We taught them that they could be.

Most of us were raised by boomers,
and maybe our older Gen Xer friends were
raised by the silent generation.

We thought we were smart,
we thought we would fix all our parents' ways.

Yet in fixing the problems we thought we had
we swung the pendulum in fully the opposite way.

So, if you look at the next generation
and shake your head and cry,
just know that we the Gen Xer crowd
are the very reason why.

As parents, we should all realize that we had a great deal to do with how our kids became as adults. Thank you for setting us all clear on that, Miranda. Role models are role models whether they want to be are not. We do influence our children, usually either because they like who we are or because they don't like who we are. This opinion usually changes about 20-30 years later. lol Thanks for sharing, Bommer Bill :-)

Now I get to find out if my newly acquired (first and only grand baby is 4 months old) grandparenting skills are better than my parenting skills.

thanks for explaining that to me. I was thinking GEn X was 90's, so I mixed your generation up with another!!

Glad to clear things up. Yes, I hear you that some kids are great and have values. :D

wow, this is spot on. I am trying to think if I raised my kids to be like Generation X. What is the name for children of the 70's and 80s. Mine are fairly decent kids and my daughter is teaching her kids great values, so there ARE kids out there who still understand how to value respect and other virtues

Gen Xers were born in the range of 1965 to 1980. Dates are approximate and vary a little bit depending on which website answers that question. Next generation is millennials. Then there is Gen Z. I am in my mid 40's and my children are all early 20's and so I think that they are Gen Z.

As a GenX-er... this one hit me right in the gut with its truth! Wise observations!

A Boomer made a similar complaint to me about this, and I thought about it and ultimately, I had to disagree with said person. Thank you for the commit especially the "Wise observations!" part of it.

Yes! Saying it like it is. But the pendulum has a propensity to swing back, though not to its original position. Looking after number one is indeed the first principle of the present generation, sadly.

It might be our grandkids that swing it back around or maybe their kids. And I think you are right it won't be in its original position when it does come back around.
