Freedom's Blessing
Many blessings we are given.
Some of us receive more of some blessings
than we do of others.
However, there is one blessing
which needs to be equal for all.
It includes the basic human freedoms
which are even called “God-given,”
but are they really equal for us all?
So important for the world is freedom
that it was foremost in the minds
of the Founding Fathers who wrote the Constitution,
an inspired document that influenced
the course of history for many nations to follow.
It’s true that only the white man benefited
from all those freedoms in the beginning,
but throughout time, and with the struggle of brave souls
who sought total equality,
in the world today, those of us in the free world
are supposedly guaranteed our human rights
regardless of gender, race, or creed.
.
Even just until the last century,
freedoms had not been won for all
even though for years they’d been
burgeoning across the planet.
Sadly, however, more than half the world
still is not completely free.
Women suffer most of all for this
as also do the impoverished
and those whose belief systems do not
match those of the majority.
Wars have been fought in the name of freedom.
Blood of the brave has been spilled countless times for it,
yet even today in the so-called “civilized” world,
freedom for all is but a dream for many.
Can those not allowed to speak their own minds be happy?
Can those for whom what they do with their lives
is being dictated to them still be happy? Possibly!
But I know that if my very thoughts were disallowed
to be spoken, I would feel miserable.
Even today, censorship is forming new storm clouds
on our horizons.
We who already enjoy our basic human rights
cannot allow ourselves to lose the freedoms
that set us apart from the parts of the world
whose citizens would give anything to be like us.
Never can we allow our precious freedoms to vanish.
Without our dreams or the ability to make them happen,
we cannot be the people God intended for us all to be.
Freedom matters and high is freedom’s cost.
Please fight to keep the freedom
that rightfully is yours, for it’s your best blessing.
