I think the church "lost its hold" because it engaged in politics, which is a dark enterprise. A church should stick to helping with spiritual guidance and not allow the evil of politics in. Sad.

I think that the Church's teachings have to be relevant, without changing the texts or pandering to the mood of the moment. In other words, for today's questions, the Church has to provide approaches and answers that are steeped in the wisdom of the past. That ain't easy to do. :) gw
