Free Verse Makes Me Happy
Free verse is natural to me.
She calls to my soul. She gives me strength.
Rhymes prance forth in my brain sometimes.
Structured poems give me experience,
stretch me, mold me, educate me.
Free verse ostentatiously demands her own way.
She makes me feel happy, for she seems natural.
However, when I want to stretch, I look up sonnet,
ninette, tanka, limerick … trying something new.
Luckily, no one says “what were you thinking?”
Structure is not easy for me.
I count my syllables differently.
And yet, structure calls to my heart,
because it forces me to think outside myself.
Poetry gives me new experiences,
stretching my imagination.
I am struggling to do the best I can,
making a multitude of mistakes
I wander through this poetic field of trying.
