Notes About The Poem

FOREVER ASCENDING

The low lands call
I ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ answer
They are ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ a free dwelling
Without having to conquer

¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ mountain makes its move
Beckoning me to ascend
A ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ difficult path
¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ up the slippery bend

I cannot choose both
¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ a choice to make
¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦
This will determine my fate

I ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ choose the mountain
With ¦¦¦ its stress and strain
¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦ by climbing
¦¦¦ I rise above the plain

I choose the mountain
¦¦¦ I will never stop climbing
I choose the mountain
¦¦¦ ¦¦¦ ¦¦¦¦¦ forever ¦¦¦ ascending

I choose the mountain

The blackout form creates striking visual gaps, making the surviving words feel like footholds on the climb. The repeated “I choose the mountain” gives the poem a resolute rhythm, while “forever ascending” turns that choice into an enduring commitment to growth.

No matter what level, always someone will be there to knock you down a bit further. One gains nothing if no challenge -- I also choose the mountain. Well said.
