Oh, flower in this crannied wall, how did your roots prevail and sprawl from seed that landed in a crack- so shallow, small, in woods set back from warm sun rays, to grow in shade with vines about you- old and frayed? Your blossom glows a vibrant red; you stand out bright among the dread of tangled sprays and dried-out brush. Your velvet petals boldly blush just like a ruby- precious stone- shines on a tarnished ring, alone. My Cinderella, come with me- this fine glass jar- your slipper be; a perfect fit, it shields your foot of roots now clean of forest soot. Soon, fertile soil you'll thrive upon- a princess rose on my green lawn, beside a prince who grew so tall- and too was rescued, roots and all. --------------------------------- February 5, 2023 2022 Poetry Marathon Qualifiers' FINAL Placement Poetry Contest Sponsor: Mark Toney

Congratulations on your trophy winning poem Sandra. I love the hardiness of nature - how a flower can exist in a crag in a wall. Exist it does but that's all it does in your poem fighting to survive.. until that is, the lonely flower's fairy Godmother comes to its aid (and rescues it from those ugly vines) so that it can grow and bloom happily ever. :) Your Cinderella theme adds depth to an already very clever write. I really enjoyed it! Cheers - Gary

The easeful flow of your rhyme reinforces the vibrancy of the red bloom enduring the pinch of the crannied wall. The Cinderella allusion is icing for readers to savor. Superbly written! Brian

Sandra, this is such a delightful poem. I love the Cinderella story of a flower in the crannied wall overcoming all odds to glow “a vibrant red among the dread of tangled sprays and dried-out brush.” And then there’s a prince at the end! “Congratulations on your first-place finish on Mile 7 of my 2022 Poetry Marathon Contest.
