My 98 year old mom, Esther, wrote a nice note to her 100 year old sister, Edie, and I translated it into a rhyme.

Firecrackers will ever crack, And you will always have my back. Do you think, when we took that car, We might have gone a bit too far? I don't think when you drove that loop, We went too far with the coupe. Anyway, there's no way to prove - You see, the tires did not move. We need not be doing time - Dancing to Dorsey is no crime. Tires not moving, it was hearsay - No crime to dance to Jimmy Dorsey. I could say the very same Of dancing to Harry James. I like Glen Miller! D'ya know a Place we can do the Balboa? Country bike rides, sharing clothes - What wonderful times were those! We shared them with our kid brother Who hit one pitch after another. Just three kids out in the sticks - Edie, Esther, Buddy Hicks.

Beautiful memories. I'm a fan of Big Band. I like listening to the brass section. (Am I brassy?) This is a very good poem.

Thanks - I don't know much about that music, but it was my mom's thing for sure!

Thanks Tom. My mom or my brother's wife came up with that picture to match my mom's sentiment. The one thing I didn't understand was my mom mentioned "firecracker days".

Dear David, your vibrant, evocative translation of your mother's note to her sister is heartwarming in its strength of family love and sweet nostalgia brought to vivid life on the breath of your wonderful verse and rhymes. What a fantastic peek in the their everyday world in bygone days. I adore the portrait of this trio; "Edie, Esther, Buddy Hicks." Wow! Your 98 yr old and and her 100 yr old sis.. amazing! Warmest wishes my poet friend.. ~Susan

Thanks for your kind words Susan! I guess you could say my mom's note was free verse poetry.
