Finer Things In Life

The finer things in life are not diamonds and pearls But desire a good reputation and the principled life. Think about it, my friend, not all of those glitzy girls Are ultimately as desirable as a faithful, loving wife. But desire a good reputation and the principled life, Cherishing virtue well-obtained is quite satisfying, Are ultimately as desirable as a faithful, loving wife Knowing you’re grounded you’ll find most gratifying. Cherishing virtue well-obtained is quite satisfying When you are taking stock of your goals in life, Knowing you’re grounded you’ll find most gratifying Like living peacefully with others, eschewing strife. When you are taking stock of your goals in life Think about it, my friend, not all of those glitzy girls Like living peacefully with others, eschewing strife, The finer things in life are not diamonds and pearls.

Thank you, Caren. It certainly worked for Deb and me, although she got her share of diamonds and pearls, too. I think she got them because she knew what was really valuable.

Best advice because the mind is not at peace without living a decent life-- People are always searching for something, not knowing what they have. A good reputation and decency are best even without a mate. You show us in your poetry Milton, that you are a decent fellow! Like Jeff, my head is spinning. lol

I agree most heartily Milton and the same goes for girls who look for a husband. You have to be careful not to end up with someone who runs around and spends all his money on partying and women. Those guys don't make a good husband or father. If you find a good mate you have found a real treasure. Good stuff my friend. God Bless, JB

One thing that helps me is remembering that the lines have to make sense in the next stanza, so you sort of have to think ahead. When you get to the last stanza, you just do some hoping and praying! (chuckling)

Your message resonates in this poem, Milton: The finer things in life are not diamonds and pearls---But desire a good reputation and the principled life. How very meaningful and insightful look at life! Excellent Pantoum.
