Premiere Contest WinnerFever Dream

Night rain on the window pane is the night sweat of my fevered life dream. Time bloats like the reflection I try to avoid. Tears on the bedroom floor for however many minutes or hours. I crawled in here, felled like a sick elm, sickly scooped-out, hunger hollowed, word emptied. Hands...hands that feel like they don't belong to me any more. Something moves within them, puppets them: a tingle like lightning.

icicle fingers
too cold to hold a teacup -
wrists are winter twigs

Fingernails mauve-mottled, heart struggling to pump, circulation slow-crawling. Hands are too blue-numb to grip, and I'm watching the teacup slip...

white pottery shards
mosaic of tannin stars -
the carpet is stained

I found an anthology of short stories I first read years ago, before dream winced into nightmare. Opening the book, a slip of paper floats out, white-dazzly as a snowflake. My hospital admission letter, the sudden white shock of it bookmarking a favourite story.

Bedtime stories. Sweating between the sheets with Ray Bradbury, electric singing sentences pressed to my skin. The push and pull of his prose singing my body electric, giving me a word-**** I won't forget.

Ray Bradbury's everywhere, he's in the air, his words rearranging themselves into kaleidoscope patterns; strange lexicon of snowflakes, of stars. But voices are reassuring me It's just a little fever dream.

Strange how the memory sea floods me as the mind becomes ever more disconnected; the past's wisps floating like feathers through the fog. Fever flicker of faces: Sarah's, silver-shimmery through tears, her blonde hair haloed in teardrop light.

Tonight, anorexia's voice is the knife strike in a slasher movie: a killing, shrilling eardrum drilling. It's the chainsaw buzz scything corn, the shadow knife behind the Psycho curtain.

My immune system is failing, body breaking down.

waves of nausea
crashing on my body's shore -
gastroparesis

slow fast slow fast slow
stutter stop start slow stop start -
arrhythmical heart

Sibilant strobe of whispers, voices, the past's echoes, floating through fever fog...We don't think you're looking after yourself...You're a risk to yourself...I'm sectioning you under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act...

The minefield mind-trap closes on a single word: How?

How has it all come to this?

I seem to recall this was a true experience for you. Well, the poem certainly paints a vivid accurate picture . I loved the reference to the bookmark and Ray Bradbury. I read his short stories in high school. Done novels too. Didn't he have something called Body Electric, which you reference in this poem as well? Congrats on this trophy win

I don't know if this is based on life events in your life, someone close to you or someone you know or piecing together several stories that you have heard, read, etc. but it reads as real as it had happened to you. They say anorexia is really horrible on a person's overall health as is bulimia. Thank you for sharing this one with us so we might understand more fully what a person at is experiencing this ill goes through. Sara K

Feels like you're telling your own story here, and living the nightmare. Hope things get better for you, we all need a Charlotte kicking.

Congratulations on your trophy win, Charlotte, with this hard-hitting poem. It is a "wow" that punches with images of "nausea," "mind-traps," "slashers!" Vivid. Anorexia indeed sickens the mind and the spirit. Thank you for sharing the devastating effects of this disease. I love the way to take the poem out of the personal perspective into reality at the end. Congratulations on this poetic masterpiece that so many should read. Sending you blessings for healing, comfort and wholeness!

Prayers.., I’m bipolar so I can easily relate, empathize, breakdown is not easy and leaves a bitter taste. My prayers go out to you with praise for your pen of gold! God bless you.

If this isn’t POTD, POTW, POTY this site has lost its way and needs to begin repping outstanding artists struggling to just put pen words to paper. Not a lovely piece but emotionally charged, succinctly crafted, reality naked, and utterly draining. Your art always allows readers into the soul of a world challenged every-woman. Thx for this work.

My heart goes out to you, Charlotte. A sideline, I loved Bradbury’s “Dandelion Wine.” I read it during the pandemic. Had to do book reports for the library, where I worked, as I was working from home. I read your note to Paige, on her poem. I pray things get better for you.

Dear Charlotte, I think everyone is getting sick this year. I could feel the cold in the hands, the nausea tide, the Bradbury-charged delirium, all of it circling that quiet, brutal question at the end. I am glad you are feel better. Excellent! Winter Blessings, Charlotte, Daniel

Amazing and heavy, you have to breathe it. I like Bradbury's quote about letting "the beautiful out"- I am glad you're writing. I cannot imagine how this wouldn't win. :) ....but I can feel the suffering, and would want it to be better. faithfully,
