Fading Memories

By Valerie D. Staton

It pains me my memories are fading
My parent’s memories were sharp as tacks
It is their recollections I am invading
I wish I could have my memories back
I preserve moments with paper and pen
Photos crammed onto adhesive pages
Diary depicts who, what, where and when
These tools capture moments throughout the ages
Even as I write I struggle to find
Vocabulary learned many years ago
It seems something is, attacking my mind
Trying to steal, everything I know
With prayer and petition I intend
To recall my memories once again

Thanks for reading. I have not been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia. I have lupus and that may be the culprit or just a part of getting older. My mother was diagnosed with dementia though... I appreciate you reading my work and hope you continue to drop by. Take care and Gd bless you!

We on poetrysoup.com wish you wellness Valerie. Dementia hit one close, beloved aunt of mine. However, we hope that your memory loss side steps that severity + that you can carry on well, with your poetry + life. Thinking of you. Sending your positive wishes. Brian

I have known a few people with Alzheimer's which is a progressive disease with dementia and memory loss. It's so sad to see once vibrant people become a shell of their former selves with no recall of even close loved ones! My friend, you have penned an awesome gem, reflecting the devastation caused by such a condition! Congratulations! Hugs and love. Pandita

Memories are treasured possessions! Everything only makes sense with the memories attached to them! Great poem!

I am terrified when the memory does not cooperate. This poem reminds me that everyone is human.

It is little things but weighed on my mind enough for me to create a poem regarding memory loss. I was told this comes with age. I thought it was the lupus.
