The Whiskey Taster’s Flavor Guide

Eyes Behind Fire and Smoke

Light bristles through the window
Reflective of life carrying on
Carrying on, it feels so strange.

Strange that a life worth living
With love and kindness abound
Is all you wanted.
It was so close and yet still so out of reach.

Reach for the stars
You never could
Could. Should. Would.

Would you stay if I asked you?
The you behind the eyes of fire and smoke.

Is that you?
It does not feel like you.
It does not look like you.

It’s dark. Dark. So Dark.
Fight it.
Let me be your light
Light at the end of the tunnel.

Release. Release.
Feel it.
Let me be your guide.
Your guide. Your friend. Your ally.

Surrender. Surrender.
Take it.
Its all I hope for you.
The you behind the eyes of fire and smoke.

Do you know that I love you?
Do you know that I will miss you?
The you behind the eyes of fire and smoke.

A memory.
Its what is left behind.
Behind the eyes of fire and smoke.

I think what I love the most about this piece is that it can be read and interpreted in so many different ways as to whom this person behind the eyes of fire and smoke could be. A lost love who walked away, someone who has died, depression, yourself.. Beautifully written. Congrats on your win.

Hi Skat. Thank you so much for your very warm welcome! I have always written poetry however have always been too scared to actually post or publish them for fear of ridicule. My friend (whom this poem is about) was recently in a horrific accident and her ordeal inspired this poem. Since then I have written a few, it seems I have unlocked my "writers block". I have had such warm welcomes from the people on here, it really is so refreshing. Thanks for stopping by with your warm hello! Take care!
