I can't figure out how to get an image here of my daughter here from either FB or from desktop. It's so annoying. Hoping this link takes you to the picture of her today. She is almost 43 now.

My age was twenty, and I’d just been wed. In three months I was pregnant. It had not been planned. So what went on inside my head to simply let it happen with no thought? It was a different era. Even though we were dirt poor, we did not think things through. Get married; then give parenthood a go. Our church advised this as the thing to do. I found a job while still attending school to help with the expenses. Feeling gross was awful, but it passed, and things got cool. My tummy grew, and soon my time grew close. To go through labor pains gave me some fear, but I was ready just to get it done! The doctor told me as my time grew near, the heartbeat was a boy’s. I’d have a son! From start until the end, labor took me more than twenty hours, and it felt great to get the anesthesia finally! To see my son at last I couldn’t wait! My mom had birthed five girls, so I was thrilled to think it was a boy for my first born. But soon my heart with disappointment filled. I’d carried a boy nine months, I could have sworn! “It’s a girl,” the doctor said. Upset I felt, but then her precious face I saw! Great joy replaced my very brief regret, and gazing at my daughter, I knew awe! Such a lovely poem, Andrea! I can identify with your feelings about being married so young and having a child right away. I was 19 and our son came almost exactly nine months later. Very well, written, and your daughter is beautiful. Best wishes for the contest! Hugs, Sandra

This is so awesome in so many ways. My daughter is her age. She's my middle child. You covered everything in a few stanzas. Well done and another winner. :) (She is a beautiful young lady. That smile!)

You are sweet, HArry. Angela is also so talented. She does scrapbooking and crafts and has even written a semi-autobiographical book, which is based on her first marriage to a mentally ill man. It would be amazing if she published it one day.

Hi Andrea, This is a great poem for the contest theme. Disappointment turned to joy real fast. Looking into your baby's face causes you to forget about everything. Did your daughter have a boy later on? I wish you the best of luck in the contest:-) Alexis

yes, my first grandchild , a boy, was from her. Also my second child was a son. The girl ended up being the "sweeter" of the two but my son is doing well as a DA.

Wonderfully felt, Andrea. I was also twenty, also young, married, and poor, and thought the whole time my first born was a boy. As soon as I saw her, I felt complete amazement and awe. Never thinking boy again until I read your poem. Thank you for the memory. Good luck in the contest.

What a wonderful story, Andrea. Beautiful tears of joy. I would have loved to have had a girl in addition to my two boys. And, I know you are a great mom.
