Expectations

Expectations by Daisy Eghoroekwuke

Why do I try? Why do I pour so much into love but still feel unwanted?
I pray, I beg, I hope
joyful at an outcome, enjoyable at first,
but they never meet the other side of me.
Then I sob at my loss.
My tears fill up the room; the atmosphere is choking.
When the pain is too much to bear,
will I agree to the downfall the world has lined up for me?
What an easy option.
I put effort into something that is so obvious to crack.
No feelings or emotions were hurt on their side.
But what about me?
“Me?”
No, there is no me to them,
for I’m just another subject of exploitation.
Why can’t someone cry if they don’t see me all day?
Why can’t people enjoy me like I enjoy them?
Why can’t people love me more than I do for them?
Though they may, but not enough.
They find someone else as their other half,
and I’m just there, wondering what happened,
left in the dark.
Just one past chapter, I guess.
Weariness of thinking. frustration.
What ifs fill my mind.
I want to talk more,
but what if they find me annoying?
Texts sent, hours unread.
What if they do it on purpose?
A question I’m too little to answer.
Chatter and laughs from others, I join in and talk to the crowd,
while they look down, uninterested.
Then I start making kissy faces out of disappointment.
Who will leave me hundreds of missed calls
just because they miss my voice?
Who would not focus if I’m not there?
Is there someone out there?
If then, where are you?
Do I know you?
Have we already talked?
Or what if I’m treating you
the way I hate being treated?
