Eternal Eve
Eternal Eve
I was alone
When you came to me
Naked and ashamed,
Bearing aloft
The sacred fruit
Torn from the tree he’d named.
I was alone
When you tempted me
To launch a thousand ships,
Ant the city of Troy
Did perish then
For a pair of lovely lips.
I was alone
When you offered me
The freedom of the Nile
But the flower of Rome
Was ground to dust
Because of a woman’s smile.
I was alone
When you spoke to me
Of Russia’s snowy Steppes,
But they took my lands
And banished me
To Elba’s rocky depths.
I was alone
When you whispered
Words so sweet and low
And drew from me
The secret plans
That helped my country’s foe.
I was alone
When you beckoned
To me from every age
And the powers of Eve
Did violence add
To history’s every page.
