Growing up in a family that stayed to themselves
Really never knew how other people lived
Made everyday life normal to us children.
Mother was meek, stayed home
To care for us, clean, and cook.
We played around the house,
Listened, and followed parents' rules.
School was an environment of safeness
And of learning structured knowledge.
Dad was the provider; working hard
And leading the family.
When he came home, his day was over for him;
Mother served him hand and foot.
His discipline was very hard.
On Sundays, we went to church,
Sitting quietly in our nicest clothes.
There was one thing missing in my heart,
I had thought, and it was the love of one another.
Years went by with no change in our family.
Children went their separate ways as we got older.
I found out everyone does not live, think,
And feel the same way.
My spiritual epiphany was a profound
Moment for me one day.
When I found out I was pregnant with my first child.
A moment when I experienced love, unconditional,
All-consuming, and deeply personal.
Growing up, my family missed out on so much.
The most important was the understanding of love.
