Enabling

The phone rings and I know
That you will beg for money
The amount is always too small
Too telling of your situation

It’s easy to believe lies cries
From red high eyes
I despise the disease
That holds hostage
Your humanity as you’d steal
Lie kill to support your habit

At some point you will
Have to face your demons
The reasons you use
Are too many and too few
And I am tired simply tired
Of trying to save you from yourself

It’s not that I don’t care
I am painfully aware
That you do not
Not enough to trust
Tough love and stop
Holding us hostage
Ripping our hearts
For a snort a sip a dip a puff
All because you can’t get enough

I’m done being the blame
For your emotional abuse game
Gaslighting and the insane
Behavior
Only the savior can save
I’m done enabling

what a heart breaking scenario and one of the hardest hitting poems I have read Karen, addiction grips the family not just the addict and there is only so much giving one can do knowing that your support will never be enough to overcome this demon - this stanza leapt out at me "It’s not that I don’t care I am painfully aware That you do not Not enough to trust Tough love and stop Holding us hostage Ripping our hearts For a snort a sip a dip a puff All because you can’t get enough " hugs jan xx

Jan it is true the whole family is affected even the ones who have to practice tough love. Even the ones who seem to ignore because they feel helpless and don’t know what to do! Thanks for your kind support and reading so many of my poems. Hugs back
