Eloquence of Silence

A rainbow once said
To fall falling in cascade,
What use loudmouth made
When silence can say a lot,
Wordless, when the words cannot.

Poet’s note: A deep thicket of green forest surrounds a valley wherein falls a cascade piercing the tranquillity that reigns otherwise. In waters gathered in the valley before flowing away as a river, a reflection of a rainbow peeps out as if to say something to the noisy waterfall. And this Tanka gets born.

Wonderful Tanka! Your poet's note is enchanting. just read that you are translating verses from Ramayana. That's such a great work! Hope we have the opportunities to read. Because we are talking about translations, glad to let you know - I have translated a few long poems by Rabindranath Tagore, and posted them at PoetrySoup. The links are attached to my biography. Thank you so much. Best wishes ~ Mala

Thank you Malaji, I just read one of the translations you referred to, and it is marvelous, but I read it without the benefit of knowing the original, as I don't understand Bengali. As to Vyasa Ramayana, it involves Sanskrit text, transliteration notations, translation in English, and meanings of every word in English, and I don't think Poetry Soup will have a place for it, nor Poem Hunter.com where I have placed some of my work like Bhagavad-Gita, Mahabharata, Subhashitas (Words Well worth), Jewels of Upanishads, Kabeers Couplets, etc. But they do take Devanagari text, not Poetry Soup. You may search Aniruddha Pathak/Poems/any of the above subject and you will be connected. Regards.

Wondrous tanka... And I also loved the note where you painted that scenery through words... So glad to know about your translation of Vyasa Ramayana. As you said it's a tedious task and great to hear that you have successfully translated 750 verses. So great and I bow before you... I have started translating Purananuru ( An anthology from Sangam literature) which has around 400 verses and I need your blessings...

On the subject of Ramayana, you may perhaps like to read my poem, 'When squirrels earned their stripes' in two parts

Thanks for your encouraging feedback Suprajaji. I have heard about the great Sangam literature, my good wishes for the venture, all the best. You may like to read my foregoing reply to Malabikaji. If I find time to convert some of my work in PDF I will see if I can send a few chapters of my translation, regards
