Eloquence of Election

Expressions penned from soulful contemplation,
Rather rhymed, in form, or in free verse style,
May not decide my choice between the two.
It is the sense of awe that is the draw...
Awe that leaves one feeling so inspired,
Tears well up in eyes and deep sighs follow.
Poetry may rival the rising sun
With wondrous colored shades from dark to light.
Aquatic tunes in concert with moon's moods
Enchant us with the music they impart.
As love extolled in lover's lexicon
Rather rhymed with iambic expertise,
Or with angelic wings of free verse flight,
I love them both, I could not choose just one.

I so agree Connie. Each provides an outlet for different moods, different themes, different seasons of the soul. Love your lines, "Rather rhymed with iambic expertise, / Or with angelic wings of free verse flight". It is that sense of awe that is the magnetism we feel towards writing, and reading, poetry. Beautiful ~ John

Such an interesting and clever execution of the prompt. The chain of thoughts are the same for all of us except we usually force it one way or the other. Frost, the master, often didn't know how his poems would end. He wrote some unrhymed sonnets. Love your last line, perfect to the prompt. Congratulations.

Hello Connie … all genres of poetry serve a purpose. We have a choice for what we prefer, but it's really our way of expressing our thoughts, so your verse does reminds us to enjoy all - thank you Connie - Lindsay

In fact, it's like choosing between chicken or fish a pretty flight attendant offers. The god of poetry leaves us no choice) I did enjoy your eloquence, Connie. And congrats by the way)

You make very good use of free verse and rhyme, Connie, which shows that you love them both unconditionally! Can we love two persons (or more) in the same manner!!? ~ Warm regards // paul

They both have their merits and I believe free verse is best when literary devices are used in small doses but there has to be rythmn ..that you have Connie

Nice tribute to verse! I have a book called "America's Best Loved Poems" and they all rhyme. I also belong to the Academy of American Poets and poems in their publication never rhyme. Good luck in the contest! Peace & Love Matthew Anish

I think I have the same. I have found I just don't enjoy the more modern rhymed poetry of today, excluding the wonderful free verse poems posted by Poetry Soup members. Poetry is part of our every day life. Thank you Matthew. Happy holidays. xxoo : )

I saw Knives Out and guessed the riddle of "who done It' Way at the beginning. I wonder if a lot of other people did too! It was still good and kind of funny

so wonderful , Connie. I hope this one won!! I agree with Victor. I find that I use free verse (or prose more often) when I am writing on a topic very serious or real to me!
