Elephant's Ghost

This poem is a re-post from last year for the situation is worsening daily. ELEPHANT’S GHOST I am represented as a trinket on a Human's wrist. I was bought from a vendor, Sometime last September, I remember the vendor, he was, Approached by a man in the street, This man had stepped out of the shadows, The vendor to meet. The man from the shadows Met with two other men Their march sounded like military feet. Money was exchanged, someone Pointed to a truck down a lonely street, The poachers knew This deserted, but well known beat, In the truck were the tusks of us all, These despicable people had, Gunned us down, and one by one, Including me we met our fall. Our tusks were hacked out, Some of us not quite dead no doubt! But I haven’t lost hope, It isn’t too late, To stop our bloody, grizzly fate, Because a trinket made from part of me, Means that humans can visibly see, And then ask, for goodness sake, Can we not try and end this heartache, This horrible butchery, With which we can all agree, That, trinkets made from the tusks of An elephant like me, never ever be sold, And become the past, a history, That will then only be told, As a fairy story about wicked men Who killed elephants in scores of ten. Elephant proudly is my name, Please stop this greedy killing game, I chose to have my ghostly say, And look forward to the day, When elephant trinkets no more be made, And for them be paid In a sleazy vendors store, Behind drawn curtains and a greasy floor. I now can rest, And feel blessed, I appeal to all who hear, For I’ve whispered in your ear, Please be my mouth piece, Try and make this madness cease, Let us in unison say, Poachers go away!

Yes, we definitely can all live without something that hurts these precious animals. Well said. In 1999, I wrote a poem titled Tuskless, that implies what you so skillfully described in your poem.

Good for you MLK, the more attention and responsibility that is shown the better we hope and pray this tragic situation will become, and, that a pitiful slaying will come to an end. But greed is inherent in mankind. Christmas Blessings. Jennifer.

Yes! The greed of this world and their lackluster attention of all that God gives us for free produce ghosts of a kind...not kind.

It's such a sad thing, Jenn, but there will always be greedy people who will make a buck no matter what the cost. Your nicely penned poem brings light to this sad situation. All the best my friend. Hugs, John

There needs to be such a high fine for anyone caught poaching or buying that the risk would not be worth it. Laws need to be changed. It breaks my heart to see these intelligent beloved animals killed for their tusks. Your poem is excellent and going into my Faves Jennifer! Happy holidays! : ) xxoo

What a beautiful comment Connie, I so agree with you but I am like a voice in the wilderness, who of note will take notice of the ghost voice of an elephant - wishing you and your family a blessed Christmas my friend. Hugs, Jennifer.

Hello Jennifer … a very sad poem indeed with a base of misery inflicted on beautiful intelligent animals that deserve better treatment. I just wish the money people could be prosecuted - thank you Jennifer for this fine verse - Lindsay

Thank-you Michelle - it is inhumane and horrific but the strength of these syndicates has become as enormous, just like drugs,. Thank you for your comment. Hugs, and blessings, Jennifer.

I am ready to sign a petition and go on a hunters' hunt with you where we taser them and truss them up and leave them for the elephants to play with as toys.

this is heartbreaking... i think they should arrest anyone selling ivory products, then people would turn in the poachers or refuse to buy the goods leading to an end of senseless murdering of elephants... powerful poem Jennifer... hugs

There is a delicate, fine line between poachers and those governing the rules of poaching Sandy! Man and his greed is rife worldwide, look at the drug situation, a very similar comparison can be drawn. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Victor is correct... the word... Atrocious... really an Atrocity... at its base root. I will wear nothing that cost a life of something so beautiful...be it elephant, lion, tiger, or other beast, that I have no need to take...to feel special. I am already special... God said so... I like to take pictures, and keep memories instead. I do not need to eat the elephant... those that need the meat... it is their right, on their land... but not a trophy... at all.

Ann, so right , Ivory used to be sold years ago in tourist shops worldwide but stopped about 30 years ago - now only sold in South Africa when the Ivory tusks are confiscated or a culling takes place. Very sad! Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Thank-you Silent One, I feel fiercely about what is happening to these magnificent creatures who are prehistoric - young ones are orphaned and left alone, volunteer groups tend to them until they are older to re-introduce into the wild again, that is if the young ones survive and don't die pining. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.
