His smile is like a white crescent, but a murky sky is hidden inside. Afraid to portray mourning's of his mind nor describe sour sickness of his tongue. Piercing pain constantly stabs at wounds, but you can't see his bitter blood bleeding nor the bonfires burning his burdened heart. He is the master of the masquerade, exemplary scholar of skillful silence - a psychologist's worst nightmare. Yet they flock to him to adore his words, so they can feel the magnetism of his smile, laugh at his childish antics, be happy for a while. Greatest showman playing the great pretender, but he's crumbling, stumbling and tumbling inside. Despite an abundance of admiration and applause, he finds no solace, so feels miserably alone. Feeling like a snowflake on a rainy day, an empty balloon battling against the storm. Demons of self doubt mock his actions, he shakes his head in disbelief - but they laugh, he screams, but they belittle him further! His stomach shrinks with a loss of appetite, dark bags appear beneath his sleepless eyes. Life is a whirlpool of fractured fragments of glass. Wondering what is the blessings of breathing, what is the purpose of another sunrise. He aches to be burnt into ashes Will they even miss him if he is gone? Silent One 21 October 2020 This poem is dedication to everyone who keeps a smile, when their world is falling apart. Many will relate, this is not a bio. When writing it, at first I thought about Freddie Mercury and the show must go on, but as I wrote it, Robin Williams came to mind. Someone we all miss. We never know what people are going through. Sometimes, I see someone smile, but I try to look beyond. Never underestimate the importance of reaching out to someone. It could make a big difference in their lives. As poets we have the power to reach out to many people through our words. Is there someone you have not reached out to? Thank you for reading.

I wouldn't have Freddie on this list, if he hadn't got ill he would have wanted to live forever, his mind was open, but; ill he became, Robbie, well, he carried the true demons within his mind, he made the world laugh, but; inside he was crying, he may have thought will we even miss him once he's gone, sadly he went not knowing we would, Silent One, you are an empath to others feelings which you then put into words so the rest of us can feel and understand, Robbie is missed for sure . . . : (

I think Freddie should be on this list, because he was the great pretender, he was so lonely and so sad, and so misunderstood, he had a life of things not going his way and he was easily misled... Thank you..

This is beautifully done; it is so true; the harder the person smiles, sometimes the more difficult their trials and tribulations. They want to do whatever they can to uplift others. For in uplifting others, we can dissolve our sadness a tiny bit.

Hi Silent one, you write below your poem, as if you are going to be gone for a long while, it will all feel so different without you, you are a mentor, a sentimental friend and beyond all else, a remarkable and talented poet. Sad when some hides behind pain, and laughs so that he appears normal. Robyn Williams fits this write, an excellent actor. I had to look up the meaning of the title of your poem, but such an amazing write Silent one, such depth and emotion. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

I do believe Robin Williams and Freddy Mercury can be anyone of us anytime .It is so easy to get trapped in self-doubt,pain,loneliness and even ask the question What is our purpose of life,Why the suffering, why are we here..But thanks to people like these.we learn from their loss. There s always someone somewhere willing to hear..even if it s our own soul. Many do hide pain well..but pain still lures there..yet so does joy..It doesnt rain forever.I really loved the depth of thought in yr poem.WOW

Emotions of the heart are felt, even in silent moments. Body language- it gives away many secrets, even for those hiding behind a smile. Sometimes, words give away how someone is feeling. Just my observation. You are right, you never know what someone is going through- unless you reach out. ~ Brandy

Dark and beautiful words, Silent One. I also miss Robin Williams. Some people do hide it well. This is a very interesting version of the Show Must Go On. I've only ever heard the original. A powerful addition to your poem. Have a great night :)

- It's about our mask ... we try to hide our tears in the smile - The pain and suffering of life is carried in the depths of the heart - Because there is so much pain no one can see ... "invisible sick" ... a difficult secret, my friend - I think this is a reflection of many people, thank you for writing it :) - hugs // Anne-Lise :)

the title alone drew my attention...new word to add to the vocab list! great write..most of us have happy masks and we don't wish to burden others with our pains knowing they have enough of theirs.. As a parent, you learn to hide issues for the children's sake but then there are those who feel the need to reveal it all with fights so loud they declare all to the neighborhood and the next day they carry on like all has been solved until the next episode! the extremes and all in between! :)

This kind of souls born to give.. They keep emptying their wells of Love, Beauty, Hope, care, sensibility.. and none, including themselves, is really aware that their land is getting drier and drier when the others fail to refill their wells with sufficient and life sustaining flow of Love, care and most of all understanding.. We constantly learn to give, share and care.. thank you so much, Silent One for sharing your wonderful thoughts and genuine feelings. My deepest regards and blessings

Almost four years since my wife died and I would rather follow her. But I know suicide is no answer. We are here for a purpose we must fulfil. ~~

So sad that many put on a brave front whilst inside they're battling inner demons. Unfortunately there are no tell tale signs and many take what they see as the only way to inner peace, suicide. Tom

Wow SO! This is one of your best in recent memory, a masterful write. Love the word pairings, the alliteration. The write reminded me of an old Motown song Tears of a clown. I'm saving this one as a fave!

My nephew is such a person who says he smiles on the outside but never on the inside. Why some suffer such a fate, I wonder. We ponder the ways of God to show us life and death through people and circumstances, through silence and laughter...often these two intertwined as in the case of Robin Williams.

I think many are like this, sadly, a lot depends on our childhood, our outlook in life and certain trauma we have suffered.. Thank you
