Notes About The Poem

A  Shakespearian Sonnet

Dressage Rider

Perfecting skills to calm a flighty horse.
Compact its trombone limbs with reins and legs
performing with no noticeable force,
all trouble and delight that beauty begs.

One horse, one rider, indivisible;
sky-born with earth-bound duty to endorse.
Control from legs and seat must be invisible,
obeying smooth transitions on the course.

Struck by awe, crowds watch, as in a trance
a pleasure trip controlled by aids precise.
Such liveliness contained in equine dance,
by what divine device - this Paradise?

Each discipline involved must ne'er be seen.
Before our eyes must seem a floating dream.

Your lovely sonnet brings to mind a fitting picture of a dressage rider and horse...faithful companions in and out the arena. ~ Congratulations on this fine and deserved win, Suzanne. Warm regards // paul

Great stuff. It brings memories to me. Not of dressage and exact equine expression. More lik egalloping over a reclaimed airfield. It love riding and had many horses. Gave it up when my first marriage collapsed. Now I have very different floating dreams. Many wishes, Kai

Hi..I just watched the 2012 London Olympic Dressage winner. Your poem captures the beauty, grace, and unity between horse and rider. It was flawless. I never saw any exchanges between the two. Effortless beauty.. Thanks for sharing..xx Holly Moore
