Dream of Hope
The light has burned, the rain has fallen thin,
Long years have passed since boyhood roamed the streets,
And youth has died away in grief or sin
To melt old age, which weighs all foolish deeds.
A moth falls captive to the dream of hope
Which might shine true in the eternal night,
Though not a soul has ever stayed afloat
For long enough to sever wrong from right.
We wake, we breathe, we dream, we fail, we die
And bear our longings into lasting void,
Where no one lives to hear the lightest sigh
Or laughter of an evening much enjoyed.
