I looked at her across the years
her graying tresses, winnowed tears
and there amidst, my own dread fears
that life might find her lacking -
her one true love
long dust, thereof ...
I gazed on her thru ages, hence
the care-worn furrows years dispense
with Autumn's chill that ne'er relents
ripe beauty, sweet and lasting -
the dreams, all missed
should fates persist ...
I saw her through the eyes of change
those things that time could rearrange
but not a charm was lost or strange
her smile still stole my breathing -
but would the years
grant me, or tears?
I viewed her self, far down the road
with languid limbs and stature bowed
still, her allure and splendor flowed
with grace God grants the angels -
an unknown art
should I depart ...
I watched her growing old in dreams
cool by the moon's much bluer beams
and warmed by day, as day so deems
but always there beside her -
that song, not sung
should I die young ...
in all those years I watched her go
from gold through silver, eyes aglow
and prayed I'd see it all - just SO
but fate can be quite cruel -
for death, you see
took HER, not me ...
the story fate thus told ...
she never WOULD ... grow old.
