Inspired by and dedicated to Patsy Werner, the first girl to give me a "Hollywood" kiss. We lived in Montgomery, Alabama and attended William R. Harrison Elementary. We had exhanged Valentines (mine to her was sooo beautiful) and sat together during a couple of Saturday morning movies; but on the 9th of April, 1958 - just 4 days after my 12th birthday - we both attended a "patio party" at the home of Carolyn Davis. The carport was adjoined to the patio, so we were dancing to 45s in the carport or sitting around talking or munching on the patio. Patsy taught me how to "bop", but only after we had first slow danced to "A White Sportcoat..." by Marty Robbins, "Young Love" by Sonny James and "Dream" by the Everly Brothers. Just as "Dream" ended, Carolyn announced that we were going to play "post office". Patsy took me by the hand and said, "That's a child's game. Let's go for a walk." As soon as we turned the corner of the house and were hidden by a giant Crepe Myrtle, she stopped me, put her arms around me...I could see it coming....will I do it right? I HAD practiced on my hand, so I was comfy kissing her. By the following Tuesday, I had a 'rep" as a great smoocher. Girls would kiss me in the hall. It was great for a chubby guy's ego, but Patsy called me a "gadabout" and wouldn't kiss me anymore. To quote Elvis from his role in Wild In The Country, I guess she "just brought out the beast in me."
